US presidents can become a modern Julius Caesar?

I CAME, I saw, I conquered Circa 2024?

WITH the controversial new US Supreme Court ruling, American presidents—Joseph “Joe” Biden, Donald Trump (if luck would bring him back to the White House after the November election), and those after them can become a modern Julius Caesar.

Touted as one of the greatest military strategists, conquerors, and leaders in world history, Caesar, 55, carried an awesome power as Roman emperor who conquered the vast region of Gaul.

Born on July 100 B.C. in Suburra, Italy, Caesar helped initiate the end of the Roman Republic when he became dictator of the Roman Empire.

In 46 B.C. he was made dictator of Rome for ten years, outraging his political opponents and setting the stage for the eventual end of the Roman Republic.

Caesar began making several drastic reforms to benefit Rome’s lower- and middle class, including: regulating the distribution of subsidized grain; increasing the size of the Senate to represent more people; reducing government debt; supporting military veterans; granting Roman citizenship to people in Rome's far-flung territories; reforming the Roman tax codes; creating the Julian calendar.

Despite Caesar’s brilliant military prowess, political skills and popularity with Rome’s lower- and middle-class, his rule was cut short when opponents—threatened by his rising power—brutally assassinated him on March 15, 44 B.C.

According to History, Caesar declared himself dictator for life in 44 B.C. However, his crusade for absolute power didn’t go over well with many Roman politicians. Fearing he would become king, a group of senators conspired to end his life.

On the Ides of March (March 15, 44 B.C.), the History added, the senators, led by Gaius Cassius Longinus, Decimus Junius Brutus Albinus and Marcus Junius Brutus, stabbed Caesar 23 times, ending both his reign and his life as he fell bleeding onto the Senate floor at the feet of a statue of Pompey.

The History said Caesar’s assassination at age 55 made him a martyr and incited a cycle of civil wars resulting in the downfall of the Roman Republic and the rise to power of his grandnephew and heir Gaius Octavius (Octavian)—later known as Augustus Caesar—to emperor of the Roman Empire.

The US Supreme Court’s historic 6-3 ruling effectively strips out key parts of an indictment against former President Trump for allegedly conspiring to overturn his 2020 election defeat.

Trump’s “win” was made possible after six conservative-leaning justices signed the majority opinion, although the three liberals dissented, expressing "fear for our democracy" and issued a blistering dissent to the 6-3 US Supreme Court decision granting Mr. Trump partial immunity from prosecution.

The three liberal justices warned that it will allow presidential power to be used "for evil ends".

While one legal expert claimed this was not simply a case of “fear-mongering”, President Joe Biden similarly warned of a "dangerous precedent.”

According to BBC, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, leading the liberals, outlined hypothetical situations where the concept of immunity could apply.

"Orders the Navy's Seal Team 6 to assassinate a political rival?" she wrote. "Immune."

"Organizes a military coup to hold onto power? Immune. Takes a bribe in exchange for a pardon? Immune. Immune, immune, immune."

"Even if these nightmare scenarios never play out, and I pray they never do, the damage has been done," Justice Sotomayor wrote. "In every use of official power, the President is now a king above the law."

Protecting our kids online. Our children are facing a mental health crisis fueled by addictive social media feeds. New York is leading the nation in confronting this crisis with our SAFE For Kids Act and New York Child Data Protection Act — legislation that will rein in addictive feeds, shield our kids’ personal data, and provide a safer digital environment for the next generation. As New York's first mom governor, I'll fight to protect our kids any day of the week.

Cracking down on illicit cannabis and boosting up legal retailers. We promised to expedite the closure of unlicensed cannabis storefronts, and I’m proud to say that we’re getting it done! In just 3 weeks, more than 100 illicit storefronts across the state were shut down by the New York State Cannabis Enforcement Task Force, and our legal retailers saw a 27 percent increase in sales.

Expanding access to maternal health care. I was in the Bronx to announce an $8 million investment in expanding the maternal care center at the Morris Heights Health Center and to highlight our work to increase doula access. Like I said, I’m New York’s first mom governor. I take this issue seriously.

Carrying the torch for LGBTQ+ equality. New York is proud to be the home of Stonewall and the start of the modern fight for LGBTQ+ rights, and we’re carrying on that fight — from joining President Biden to officially open the Stonewall National Monument Visitor’s Center, to signing legislation to expand access to lifesaving HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.

We have been warned to stay cool during extreme heat.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), when the heat index is 80 degrees or higher, the risk of occupational heat-related illness and injury increases significantly.

With the recent wave of record-setting heat, the New York State Department of Labor (NYSDL) has strongly encouraged businesses to follow the following extreme heat safety tips:

-Allow for rest regularly in shaded areas.

-Encourage workers to drink water frequently, even if they are not thirsty. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) recommend that employers provide each outdoor worker with 32 ounces of cool, potable drinking water per hour. 

-When the heat index equals or exceeds 80 degrees Fahrenheit, establish shaded areas near work sites for rest and meal periods. 

-When the heat index reaches 90 degrees Fahrenheit or greater, implement standardized rest breaks to keep workers safe. 

-Encourage workers to protect themselves from the sun and heat by wearing light clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and sunscreen.

It is also reportedly crucial for both workers and employers to recognize the signs of common heat-related illnesses.

New and returning workers should be aware that they need to build a tolerance to heat, as those who are not acclimated to working in hot conditions are the most vulnerable, the NYSDL suggested

“Our top priority is to keep all workers safe and protected. Please follow these tips to ensure that you stay safe when working in extreme heat,” the NYSDL said in a statement.

Bacolod chess master Elorta dominates Jalosjos chessfest

SPORTS scribe and United States chess master Marlon Bernardino Jr. informed us June 30 that Bacolod chesser, FIDE Master David Elorta Jr., has swept his assignments and scored 9.0 points to rule the just-concluded Mayor Frederick Seth "Bullet" Jalosjos FIDE Rated Open Rapid Chess Tournament at the Dapitan Sports and Cultural Complex, Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte on June 29.

Bernardino, who also took part in the tournament, reported that Elorta Jr. opened his campaign with a win over Lora Megan Garcia then followed it with victories over Elvis Longjas, NM-elect Michael Jan Stephen Inigo, AFM Jaymiel Piel, Michael Linde, Cedric Kahlel Abris, FM Ellan Asuela, AGM Julius Dan Augustine Ablin and Phil Martin Casiguran.

His run was a testament of his mastery in the London System Opening and also the Caro-Kann Defense, Bernardino narrated.

Elorta pocketed the P30,000 cash prize during the awarding ceremony awarded by National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Grassroots & Development Committee head and former Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Neri Javier Colmenares, NCFP Chief Executive Officer - GM/ FST Jayson Gonzales and the Executive Assistant of LGU, Mr. Jose Darry C. Patilano.

"Mayor Frederick Seth "Bullet" Jalosjos FIDE Rated Open Rapid Chess Tournament, I wish that my luck would remain the same in my next tournament," Bernardino quoted Elorta as saying.

The Bacolod champion is one of the top players of PCAP's Manila Indios Bravos set to play in the 2nd Gov. Henry S. Oaminal Open Chess Tournament on July 9 to 10 at AYA Hotel and Residences, Clarin, Misamis Occidental.

After losing to Elorta in the sixth round, Abris, one of the top players of College of St. Benilde, defeated Rigil Kent Rosell Pahamtang in the seventh round, then halving the point with Piel in the eight round and Bernardino Jr. in the ninth and final round to score 7.0 points. He received the runner-up prize of P20,000 for his efforts, continued Bernardino.

“I am very happy with my victory because almost all of the top players in Dapitan, Dipolog, Polanco and nearby provinces as well as those from Metro Manila joined the tournament," said the pride of Mandaluyong City Abris, who got the highest tie break points in the huge group of 7.0 pointers.

Piel, AGM Dennis Bernas of Iloilo, Jerish John Velarde of Imus City, Cavite, Vincent Ryu Dimayuga of Lipa City, Batangas and Irwin Aton of Davao City also finished the tournament with similar 7.0 points.

Bernardino Jr., who held Abris into a fighting draw in their King's Indian Attack skirmish, wound up over-all 15th placers after the tie break points were applied.

Bernardino Jr., who remained undefeated in nine games with 4 wins and 5 draws to raise his total to 6.5 points, a good for a share of 8th to 19th placers in the one-day event, hosted by Mayor Frederick Seth "Bullet" Jalosjos, who is also a part of the board of directors of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines headed by chairman/president Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr.

Meanwhile, three Negros Oriental players got a podium finish in the 2024 National Age Group Chess Championships Grandfinals and the Mayor Frederick Seth "Bullet" Jalosjos FIDE Rated Open Rapid Chess Tournament here.

Noel "Nonoy" Bernil Jr. made the Tanjay City, Negros Oriental proud anew as he shared top honors with Justin Jed Ortillo of Cabuyao City, Laguna at the conclusion of the boys’ Under-12 division. Ortillo took the rapid crown while Bernil settled for second place.

Bernil is schedule to represent the country in the upcoming Eastern Youth Chess Championships on July 12 to 21 in Penang, Malaysia.

NM-elect Michael Jan Stephen Rosalem Inigo of Bayawan City, Negros Oriental took the runner-up honors in the boys’ Under-18 division.

The 16-year-old Inigo, incoming Grade 11 pupil at the Lyceum of the Philippines University Cavite in General Trias City, also won the top Under 18 Boys category award in the Mayor Frederick Seth "Bullet" Jalosjos FIDE Rated Open Rapid Chess Tournament.

He is set to play in the Palarong Pambansa to be hosted this year by Cebu City on July 9 to 16.

Arleah Cassandra Sapuan of Valencia, on the other hand, wound up second place in the Under 18 Girls category award in the Mayor Frederick Seth “Bullet” Jalosjos FIDE Rated Open Rapid Chess Tournament.

The 17-year-old Sapuan, an incoming Grade 12 student of the multi-titled Far Eastern University finished 6th place in the standard competition of the 2024 National Age Group Chess Championships Grandfinals.

Earlier, Dapitan City Mayor Seth Frederick "Bullet" P. Jalosjos and  Princess Rane Magallanes made the ceremonial moves kicking off the one-day tournament also graced by Former Dipolog City Vice Mayor Edelburgo "Bebs" Cheng, NCFP Director Engr. Rey Cris Urbiztondo, NCFP CEO Jayson Gonzales , Chief Arbiter IA Reden Cruz and Mam Sendelyn Magallanes.

Happy Canada Day 2024

I HAD the privilege to celebrate the Canada Day (July 1) in British Columbia for two consecutive years in 2010 and 2011.

The celebration commemorated the date when Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada were united into a single country with parades, fireworks, and festivals. 

The union was a result of the Constitutional Act, which granted Canada a great deal of independence from England, according to historians. Over the course of a century, Canada gradually shed its dependence on the United Kingdom. 

It did not become fully independent until 1982, the same year that Canada Day became an official holiday.

To know more about the other cultures and to fully appreciate their history and way of life, I assimilated with the Chinese-Canadian, Indo-Canadian, and Polish-Canadian communities in particular during the celebrations.

Staying in a predominantly Indian community in Surrey made me closer to the magnificent Indian culture, where I was able to meet and interview some of their workaholic and service-oriented community leaders.

From Surrey, we regularly hopped to Vancouver to visit the very popular Polish Community Center on Fraser St., the place me and my Fil-Can friend, Christian Cunanan, frequented from 8 o’clock in the evening until 12 midnight during the weekend to dance the tango, rumba, cha-cha-cha, salsa, mambo, among other Hispanic dances.

I also met so many talented Chinese-Canadians in Richmond where Chinese restaurants mushroomed in every nook and cranny. 

The earliest organized Polish settlements is actually in Ontario, not in British Columbia. 

It dates back to the early 1860s. The pioneers and their descendants left an important imprint on the Ontarian landscape, with their beautiful religious landmarks, characteristic methods of land cultivation, and unique architectural style and artistry. 

We learned that much of this precious heritage was being lost through neglect or inadequate identification and documentation. 

Even in Canada’s oldest Polish settlement in Renfrew County, this  growing malaise continued to be a serious concern.

Canada Day reportedly took decades to catch on due to the fact that many early Canadians identified themselves as British. 

It was not until Canada's "golden" anniversary in 1917 (50 years), that an official celebration was recorded, it was learned. 

The next set of Canada Day festivities did not occur until ten years later, in 1927. 

The government's first recognition of the holiday occurred in 1958 with a trooping of the color on Parliament Hill. 

The first country-wide celebration was in 1967, Canada's 100th anniversary. 

From that point on, Canada Day grew and evolved to become the widespread commercial holiday.

Canada Day today is celebrated with fireworks, concerts, cookouts, and sports games. 

Canada's capital, Ottawa, Ontario, hosts the most holiday activities. There are countless events, activities, and festivals to be found throughout the city in the city streets, parks, and museums. Fireworks are launched from Parliament Hill to conclude a day of patriotic festivities. 

Formerly known as "Dominion Day," Canada Day marks the anniversary of the Constitution Act of 1867, joining Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Canada province (now Ontario and Quebec) into a single country. 

The Constitution Act granted Canada a substantial amount of independence from England, although complete independence was not given until 1982. 

Prior to 1900, there was little Canadian nationalism as many Canadians regarded themselves as British citizens. The first official celebration was held in 1917 to honor Canada's 50th birthday. 

It was not until 1946 that Phileas Cote, a member of the Quebec House of Commons, sent a private member's bill to rename Dominion Day as Canada Day. 

The Senate responded by recommending the holiday be named the "National Holiday of Canada." Since no one could agree on the name, the bill was defeated.

The government first recognized Canada Day in 1958 by holding a trooping of the color on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Canada's centennial marked the first widespread celebration in 1967. 

The event promoted nationalism and Canadian pride. The holiday continued to grow in the late 1960's and many Canada Day events were televised and broadcast throughout the country. 

In the 1980's, the government began funding Canada Day activities in smaller communities. 

The holiday was finally made official by a unanimous vote on October 27, 1982; the same year that the Canada Act was passed, removing any remaining dependence of Canada on the United Kingdom. 

While the public had recognized the holiday for decades, this marked a significant change in the magnitude of the celebrations.

In addition to independence from the United Kingdom, Canada Day also marks a number of revolutionary breakthroughs and significant events.

The first national radio hookup was initiated by the Canadian National Railway on July 1, 1927. 

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) held their first cross-country broadcast on Canada Day in 1958. 

The first color television transmission in Canada was held on July 1st of 1966. In 1967, the Order of Canada was inaugurated. "O Canada" was also named the official national anthem on Canada Day, 1980.
